arrived at the top of the stairs to see two guards twisting Max's arms behind him. Arief reached into the pocket of Max's robe and pulled out hashish. The guards dragged Max off to the basement. Then I saw Arief mutter something to Ziat, who stood near the door with a grin on his face.

/ Max returned a few days later. He limped slightly. His wrists were bandaged. His glasses were missing. He squinted painfully at me when he talked. They had taken him downstairs, beaten him for a few minutes, and then run to get Hamid, Max said. While the guards were gone, Max broke his glasses and used a sliver of the glass to slash his wrists. The guards were forced to drag him to the revere, the prison dispensary, instead of beating him further.

"It was Ziat," I told him.

"1 know, I know. Damn him! But I learned a great truth from this."

"What?"

Max leaned closer to me and lowered his voice. "Man, there's all kinds of drugs in that revere'^

Ame studied his astrological charts carefully. He had made a survey of all the men in the kogus. He was not at all surprised to find that I was Aries. It was the most common sign in prison. Aries tend to act rashly and impetuously. That was me, all right.
